Stephanie Lynne Smith
Interim Artistic Director
Born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas, Stephanie Lynne Smith is an active concert pianist, conductor, worship leader and actor. She holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1998) and a Master of Music Degree in Chamber Music Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (2001). Smith was the Artist-in-Residence for the Shari Carlson Studio August 2013-February 2014, completing and producing her first play. Her work “High Anxiety: One Woman’s Journey” takes an unapologetic look at performance issues from the perspective of a concert pianist, and premiered January 2014 to sold out audiences in San Francisco’s Union Square. Smith is Cantor at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, concert pianist for the incomparable Franc D’Ambrosio, and tours as pianist and slide guitarist with George Daugherty’s award-winning “Bugs Bunny on Broadway” and “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony,” performing with orchestras all over the world. In addition to her performance schedule, Smith can be found starring as “Fanny” and “Miss Smith” on the Fifi & Fanny YouTube Channel. Smith’s alter ego, “Miss Smith,” the stern but lovable music educator, runs a monthly open mic at the Shari Carlson Studio San Francisco and has comedic educational videos available on YouTube. Her video “How To Treat Your Pianist” has 26,000 views and counting. Smith will be performing David Garner’s “Trumpet Sonata” with Aaron Priskorn in the Hot Air Music Festival in March at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and will head into the recording studios to include this piece in the composer’s upcoming CD of instrumental works.
Smith has a long history with GALA Choruses, having served as Artistic Director for the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco for nearly a decade and Interim Artistic Director for both Vocal Minority-Small Ensemble of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and Oakland East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus. There are many things in this life that give Smith joy, but nothing warms her heart more than the smiles and laughter of OEBGMC. This group is near and dear to her heart and she counts herself fortunate to be awarded this time together.
Smith has been (legally!) married to full-time dog walker, Jen Brown, since September 2008, and divides her time between Portland and San Francisco. For more information on her performing schedule, please go to www.slsartist.com.
